Holy Spirit, let me be aware of your presence and that of countless others, as together we pray your Divine Office in love.

Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Mark 8:34

CONFESSION OF SIN

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

INVITATORY & PSALTER

Lord, open our lips,
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

THE LESSONS
1 Samuel 16:1-13 (NEB)

The LORD said to Samuel, “How long will I mourn for Saul because I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and take it with you; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem; for I have chosen myself a king among his sons.” Samuel answered, “How can I go? Saul will hear of it and kill me.” “Take a heifer with you,” said the LORD; “say you have come to offer a sacrifice to the LORD, and invite Jesse to the sacrifice; then I will let you know what you must do. You shall anoint for me the man whom I show you.” Samuel did as the LORD had told him, and went to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came in haste to meet him, saying, “Why have you come? Is all well?” “All is well,” said Samuel; “I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Hallow yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” He himself hallowed Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice also. They came, and when Samuel saw Eliab he thought, “Here, before the LORD, is his anointed king.” But the LORD said to him, “Take no account of it if he is handsome and tall; I reject him. The LORD does not see as man sees; men judge by appearances but the LORD judges by the heart.” Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel, but he said, “No, the LORD has not chosen this one.” Then he presented Shammah, and Samuel said, “Nor has the LORD chosen him.” Seven of his sons Jesse presented to Samuel, but he said, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.” Then Samuel asked, “Are these all?” Jesse answered, “There is still the youngest, but he is looking after the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and fetch him; we will not sit down until he comes.” So he sent and fetched him. He was handsome, with ruddy cheeks and bright eyes. The LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the man.” Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers. Then the spirit of the LORD came upon David and was with him from that day onwards. And Samuel set out on his way back to Ramah.

Canticle: First Song of Isaiah
Isaiah 12:2-6

Surely, it is God who saves me; *
I will trust in him and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, *
and he will be my Savior.
Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing *
from the springs of salvation.
And on that day you shall say, *
Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;

1 John 2:18-25 (TEV)

My children, the end is near! You were told that the Enemy of Christ would come; and now many enemies of Christ have already appeared, and so we know that the end is near. These people really did not belong to our group, and that is why they left us; if they had belonged to our group, they would have stayed with us. But they left so that it might be clear that none of them really belonged to our group.

But you have had the Holy Spirit poured out on you by Christ, and so all of you know the truth. I write you, then, not because you do not know the truth; instead, it is because you do know it, and also know that no lie ever comes from the truth.

Who, then, is the liar? It is he who says that Jesus is not the Christ. This one is the Enemy of Christ—he rejects both the Father and the Son. For whoever rejects the Son also rejects the Father; whoever accepts the Son has the Father also.

Be sure, then, to keep in your hearts the message you heard from the beginning. If you keep what you heard from the beginning, then you will always live in union with the Son and the Father. And this is what Christ himself promised to give us—eternal life.

Revelation 15:3-4

O ruler of the universe, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done, *

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.

THE PRAYERS

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,

Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

Show us your mercy, O Lord;

Collect of the Day: Feast of St. Matthias

Almighty God, who in the place of Judas chose your faithful servant Matthias to be numbered among the Twelve: Grant that your Church, being delivered from false apostles, may always be guided and governed by faithful and true pastors; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer concerning War in Iraq and Afghanistan

Almighty God, we look with grieved distress on wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; we watch human beings murdered, decapitated, burned alive. All we can do is think of Jesus and behold your shameful Cross.

Give us the courage to look at your Son’s gentleness on Calvary, Lord. Give us the courage to look.

We beg you to bless our soldiers, granting them every humanitarian victory, saving them from all harm and bringing them home with your fastest godly speed; that they may be swiftly reunited with their loved ones and received with grateful thanks.

We pray humbly, guiltily, earnestly for all the peoples of Afghanistan and Iraq; for an end to violence and murder and the restoration of order, prosperity and peace. We pray you to enlighten your servant George, the President of the United States, and all the members of Congress with their advisers, generals and critics, that we may obey your divine demand for justice; and enact, with your beloved peoples of all lands, your lasting peace.

We pray for Israel, O LORD, your Promised Land; for your dear Palestine and all its neighbors; for Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran. And yes, dear God, we pray most heartily for these United States.

We raise our hands and hearts to you, O YHWH, and to your Son Jesus Christ, knowing and respecting that other peoples may call you by a different name and discern you in a different light; even as we proclaim your majesty, your sovereignty and your permanent, magisterial blessing, from your holy city Jerusalem to your entire far-flung universe of earthlings, saints and stars:

One true GOD, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, world without end. Amen.

A Collect for Peace

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Unity of the Church

O God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Savior, the Prince of Peace: Give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions; take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatever else may hinder us from godly union and concord; that, as there is but one Body and one Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may be all of one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Mission

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen.
