THE APOSTLES’ CREED

[A Prayer for Haiti

O Father of the poor and Mother of the oppressed: Enfold in your arms the suffering people of Haiti. Comfort those in mourning; relieve those in pain; give shelter to the homeless and hope to those in despair. Feed your people, O God, with bread both earthly and divine, and give them your water and wine. Help them bury the dead, nurse the sick and wounded, and raise their faith and dignity, for they are some of your dearest children. Silence those who falsely claim that Haiti is somehow accursed; proclaim the truth that this vibrant, creative nation still shines as a beacon of freedom throughout the Americas. And help the Haitian people, with the nations of the world and the people of means, to rebuild their colorful land in the image of your Son Jesus Christ, who knows our suffering because he took our mortal pain into his body on the Cross, then rose again to live and reign with you and the Holy Comforter. Amen.]

This morning’s Reading from ICorinthians 5:9-6 was disturbing to me!
Paul’s advice to the faithful was to “judge” the greedy and the idolater, the drunkard, the robber. He discouraged the faithful from going to the courts for justice, and to take matters of law into their own untrained hands!
His advice was contrary to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus, who told us NOT to judge lest we be judged. He told us not to condemn!
Paul does not temper his harsh admonitions, although he does ask, Is there none wise enough among you?
Paul did not speak here of mercy, councelling, repentance, nor of forgiveness. He did say, however, and I find this interesting (equating it to “sweeping problems under the carpet” which only rear again later to cause even greater troubles) is the suggestion to just forgive matters which might have been brought to the courts in a law suit, rather than challenge perceived injustices.
And, forgive me, but I am not familiar with the teaching that we christians “judge the angels”. Please educate me!
I do think it is important for the reader to prayerfully remember that Paul was discussing these matters, considering them in a monologue format–When Our Lord spoke in the Gospels, however, He was commanding, not suggesting.
There is a huge difference, is not just in style, but far more importantly, the Epistles must be prayed and studied in the Light of the Gospel, not the other way around.

Deana’s comment above applies to Wednesday, March 3 Morning Prayer; 1 Cor 5:9-6:8.
Funny thing, I was having trouble with Paul the day before, 1 Cor 5:1-8, and left a comment about it.
I won’t attempt to justify Paul’s reasoning in these passages – only to note that when faithful people start questioning the Scriptures they read, that is a good thing; God is opening our minds to reason and wonder and be frustrated and decide what we do believe, not just what we’re supposed to believe.
Sometimes our questions lead to doubts, but often they deepen our faith and belief – which is what makes questions so fruitful. I hope, for Deana Marie and myself, our questions will lead to greater understanding. No one should be afraid to use their minds, speak up and ask questions; God’s heard them all before and isn’t offended. The Holy Spirit uses our questions to lead us closer to God.
