James A. Hood has died; he enrolled at the University of Alabama under armed guard in 1963 after a confrontation with Gov. George C. Wallace, who used the crisis to stage an attention-grabbing “stand in the schoolhouse door.” The pressure on Mr. Hood and his fellow African-American student Vivian Malone was unbelievably high; he quit after a couple of months to save his sanity, while she was somehow able to finish. He traveled north and graduated from Wayne State University in Michigan. After serving as a deputy police chief in Detroit, he eventually returned to Alabama and earned his doctorate. –> What does this have to do with our faith? These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them. And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy. But they have no root, and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away. Bishop Brooks was a star preacher and community leader during the zenith of the Episcopal Church in the 19th century. He captured the religious zeitgeist with his combination of reasoned learning and eloquence. He was conservative theologically, but his generous heart made him the leader of the liberal Church.
