Cyrus the Great of Persia, who reigned 559 B.C. to 530 B.C., did not know God, but his policies of religious toleration in the conquered lands of his vast empire made him “anointed of the Lord.” He ended the Jews’ exile in Babylon under Nebuchadnezzar II and sent them home to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple – which he paid for. Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife just as Christ is the head of the church, the body of which he is the Savior. Just as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives ought to be, in everything, to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, in order to make her holy by cleansing her with the washing of water by the word, so as to present the church to himself in splendor, without a spot or wrinkle or anything of the kind – yes, so that she may be holy and without blemish. In the same way, husbands should love their wives as they do their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hates his own body, but he nourishes and tenderly cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, because we are members of his body. “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, and I am applying it to Christ and the church. He also said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth; yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade.”
With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it; he did not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything in private to his disciples.
THE APOSTLES’ CREED

Mother Florence was born in Hong Kong in 1907. She served as a deaconness in Macao, and when Hong Kong fell to the Japanese in World War II, no priest could travel there to celebrate the Eucharist. Rather than let the People languish, Bishop Ronald Hall ordained the best deaconness he had, for reasons both practical and spiritual. After the war her ordination became controversial and she was suppressed, reverting back to a deacon but not giving up. Churches were closed during the Cultural Revolution and she was forced to work on a farm and then a factory. Churches reopened in 1979, she resumed her ministry, and two years later on a visit to family in the West, she was fully licensed as a priest in the Anglican Church of Canada. She died in 1992. Today her persistent faith is acclaimed worldwide, and some people believe that her story – an available worker in a time of acute need – may someday become a model for the ordination of women in other Churches. Gracious God, we thank you for calling Florence Li Tim-Oi, much-beloved daughter, to be the first woman to exercise the office of a priest in our Communion: By the grace of your Spirit inspire us to follow her example, serving your people with patience and happiness all our days, and witnessing in every circumstance to our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the same Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Perhaps God is calling you to offer yourself to him in the Benedictine way of life. The cornerstone of a religious vocation is the desire to give oneself to God, to draw near to him and become more and more consistently his.
