I owe it to my parents and grandparents to run this photo of the Andrews Sisters, whose lead singer Patty (center) died last week. They were so talented they made a dozen movies, many with Abbott and Costello, and had a string of hit records. But they’ll be remembered most for their tireless efforts to support U.S. troops during World War II. Heaven is full of star performers; may the Andrews Sisters always be a featured act.

How beautiful upon the mountains

THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

Williams was ordained a priest in the Church of England, but couldn’t stand Archbishop Laud’s rigid high-church policies, so he left for New England where he advocated a “wall of separation” between church and state. But the authorities there didn’t care for him either, and he finally gained a charter to establish Rhode Island. He founded the first Baptist church in Providence, and went to his grave swearing no creed but individual conscience. (Franklin Simmons)

O God our light and salvation, we thank you for Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson, whose visions of the liberty of the soul illumined by the light of Christ made them brave prophets of religious tolerance in the American colonies; and we pray that we also may follow paths of holiness and good conscience, guided by the radiance of Jesus Christ; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever.
